GUIDE TO BASIN TAPS
Bathroom basin taps are a great way to
enhance the decor of your bathroom space, en-suite or cloakroom without going
for a complete refurbishment. However, buying the right basin tap is not relatively
as straightforward as it sounds; here is a guide to the types of basin taps to
help you choose one according to your requirement.
Choosing a brand new basin tap for your bathroom can
sound simple unless you know exactly what you’re looking for. It would be best
if you considered major factors, including the style of the tap, water pressure,
whereabouts on or around your basin you’re planning on mounting your tap.
In this basin tap guide, we’ll talk you through most trending basin taps available and what you need to look out for when
choosing between them.

Mono basin mixers are available in a variety
of ranges & styles, both modern and traditional, waterfall spout or aerated
spout curved design and square. There are incredible finishes, with classic
chrome being the most popular, but you can also find modern finishes like matt
black, stainless steel, gold, and even brushed brass.
Whilst
mono basin taps are the most common type of basin taps; they aren’t suitable
for all the bathrooms. If you’re putting it on a basin with two pre-drilled tap
holes because you’ve had a two-hole basin tap or a pair of basin pillar taps,
it’s going to look rather odd. If you are buying a mono basin tap because you are
buying a new basin, you need to check the number of tap holes the basin has to
choose your tap accordingly.
The
final thing that needs to be taken into account is the size of the basin that your
new tap is going to fit on. If you only have a small basin, then a regular mono
basin tap could be too big for your basin, and you might find that water splashing
everywhere.
Basin Pillar Taps
Everyone
is familiar with basin pillar taps, although you might not know what they are
called sometimes. Basin pillar taps have two taps - one for hot water and one
for cold water. They are more commonly found in traditional bathrooms or older
houses.
Like
mono basin mixers taps, basin pillar taps are available in many styles, shapes
and finishes, at affordable prices.
As
with basin mixer taps, the vital question to ask before deciding to buy a tap
is, “How many holes does your basin have ?” So for a basin with a single tap
hole, are basin pillar taps really going to work?
3 Hole Basin Taps
The
3 hole basin taps function very similar to mono basin mixer taps - with both
hot and cold water are dispensing out of a single spout but with 3 holes. The Centre
hole is for the spout, whilst the other two holes on the sides are for the hot
and cold levers. This gives you very precise control over both water flow and
temperature.

Tall Basin Mixers Taps
With
the increase in popularity of countertop basins, the demand for tall basin
mixers has also increased immensely. Tall basin taps come in a monobloc form,
so they function precisely as a mono basin mixer. Much popular mono basin mixer
ranges also have a matching tall basin tap included, so you won’t be short of
stylish taps to choose from.
As
mentioned, tall basin mixers are almost exclusively used with a countertop basin
as they are mounted to your vanity unit or worktop instead of the basin. This
not only looks more stylish but keeps your basin looking less cluttered as well.
Small
Basin Taps
Small
basin taps are perfect for smaller bathrooms or even cloakrooms. We recommend
using a small basin tap if your basin is less than 600mm wide, so your tap doesn’t
look too large and out of place on a mini basin. Most popular mono basin mixer
ranges all feature a small/ mini basin mixer, so you don’t have to compromise
on style.
We
don’t suggest a small tap for a small basin to match the symmetry; but also for
the practical reason that If you have a large basin and a small tap, it’s going
to take longer for your basin to fill up, which, over time, is going to become annoying.
Wall
Mounted Basin Taps
Wall-mounted
basin taps are the most modern basin taps, and again, they are ideal to use
with a countertop basin in a contemporary bathroom. By mounting the taps on the
wall, you get rid of the clutter around your basin and provides a more
minimalist look. It wasn’t until some time ago that wall mounted taps were only
found in the most luxurious spas, hotels, and restaurants. However, Nowadays, you
can pick up a wide variety of wall-mounted basin taps for less than £200 and
get the most luxurious look in your bathroom.
The
greatest thing about wall mounted taps is that they are very flexible with
respect to fitting. They fit easily just anywhere, and you don’t have to think
of the number of tap holes in your basin to choose the tap.
As
we’ve talked about all the types or styles of basin taps, the choice to buy one
for you might be a little tricky and isn’t as straightforward, but we hope you
will now be able to make a more informed decision for your bathroom.
